5 Reasons to Enroll in AP Classes at an Online High School

Once you’ve decided on an online education, you may also want to consider enrolling in an online high school with Advanced Placement (AP) classes.

There is an ongoing debate as to whether enrolling in AP courses should be the route to earning college credit. Depending upon which colleges you apply to, there’s a chance some may not exchange college credit for all of your AP courses — even if you passed them with good scores.

Is it still worth taking AP courses, anyway? Many educational institutions, such as The Princeton Review, acknowledge there is clearly a benefit to enrolling in AP classes. Here are 5 reasons why:

  1. Boost your college admission rates. Many college admissions counselors do take into consideration the type of courses a student takes during high school. It’s one of the factors they consider when reviewing a student’s application. College admission is not just based on GPA and SAT scores.
  2. Prepare for college-level courses. In addition to boosting your ability to get into the college of your course, taking AP classes also can help you succeed in college — once you get there. Think about it: you’ll have a headstart in taking introductory college courses. By the time you get to college, you’ll have some experience.
  3. Add some weight to your GPA. At many high schools, including online schools, advanced placement courses are used to boost the weight of your overall GPA. So a 3.5 out of 4.0 GPA may have the equivalent of a 4.7 GPA when AP grades are integrated.
  4. Challenge yourself. How about enrolling in AP courses for the joy of learning? With AP courses, you can delve even further into some of the subjects you enjoy, including Chemistry, English and Biology.
  5. Earn college credit. Of course, there’s a chance that you can earn college credit — which could help you graduate early as well as save you some funds in tuition expenses.

If you’re intent on earning college credit through AP courses, study so that you can earn a score of 4 or higher — the minimum typically required to qualify. Learn more about various college guidelines on AP test scores for credit in the College Board’s AP Credit Policy database.

Take AP courses in online high school? Absolutely.
