Why Adults Should Complete High School

Adult Ed Students in ClassIf you’re an adult without a high school diploma, you may already know that good job opportunities are hard to find. Without a high school education, you may find that the only jobs available are part-time, which usually means you don’t get benefits like health insurance and paid time off. The good news is: It’s never too late to get your high school diploma.

Check out these reasons you should consider finishing your high school education:

  • Higher earnings potential. According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, adults age 25 and over who have less than a high school diploma earned a median of $493 per week in 2015, while workers with a high school diploma earned a median of $678 per week.
  • More job options. The BLS reports the national average unemployment rate in 2015 was 4.3 percent. For workers without a diploma, the unemployment rate was nearly twice as high — 8 percent — and high school graduates had an unemployment rate of 5.4 percent.
  • Better opportunities for children. If you dropped out of high school, there’s a good chance your own children might, too. The National Dropout Prevention Center/Network at Clemson University reports that 20 percent of students who drop out of high school said they did so to support their family, and 27.8 percent said they got a job.

Financial hardship affects the entire family, and it’s often due to underemployment, unemployment or low wages. Getting a high school diploma as an adult can improve your finances, as well as set an inspiring example for your children.

  • Flexible online learning. Don’t let your day-to-day adult responsibilities get in the way of you earning your education. Thanks to online high school courses, you don’t need to sit in a classroom for hours a day to get hour diploma. You can take classes at your convenience and complete your coursework remotely, and online counselors can help you figure out what classes you need to get your high school diploma.
  • Work toward a higher education. By earning your high school diploma, you’re setting the foundation for higher education — another step toward getting better paying and more fulfilling jobs. Again, there are many options that can fit your lifestyle. Many colleges and universities offer night classes and online classes to accommodate students’ work schedules and other commitments.

If you didn’t finish high school, consider working toward your diploma through online classes. Getting your diploma could make a big difference in your life.
