Art History

Art History Course Description:

Length/Credits: 1 semester – 1 credit
Open to: Grades 9, 10, 11
Prerequisite: None

A course based in the Indiana Academic Standards for Visual Art that engages students in sequential learning experiences encompassing art history, art criticism, aesthetics and production.

Students delve into the question, “What is Art?” Students complete a sequential study of the history of art beginning with the realism of the mid-to-late 19th Century to the present, focusing on how each group of artists subtly altered the very definition of art by creating art that challenged what people had previously accepted as art.

Students visit major museums via the Internet to connect with each of the important periods in art, study important artists from each period, and develop an understanding of important works exemplifying each period and/or artist.

Students engage in online discussions about the works they discover with their classmates and will have opportunities to produce works of their own.
